The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) needs to implement the landholding system so that Meghalaya’s claims to disputed border areas in Assam are strengthened, the Meghalaya Indigenous People’s Front (MIPF) said today.
MIPF Working President Kitboklang Lyngdoh Nongbsap said that the dispute has resulted in the public living along the border facing great hardships.
“We have seen so many problems arise in areas under Raid Marwet (of Ri-Bhoi) and other places related to land and encroachment by the Assam government, including the dual voters issue, and we feel that the boundary issue needs to be resolved immediately,” he said.
Informing that it has urged the KHADC to implement the landholding system so that people in the border area come forward to register their land with the district council, he said, “We need our people in the border areas to register their lands with the district council so that this boundary dispute can be resolved amicably.”
The pressure group has also recently met with the Chief Executive Member of the KHADC to request that the council order all Syiems along the border not to issue sanad to non-Khasi headmen as this complicates the dispute with Assam.
