To regulate trading by non-tribals, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council’s (KHADC) trade department today conducted a checking of documents of shops and street hawkers in Laitumkhrah.
The enforcement wing was led by the Executive Member in charge of Land, Teibor Pathaw, in the presence of local MDC Fantin Lakadong.
The inspection started from Fire Brigade to Don Bosco Square.
Shops that failed to produce valid documents were shut down by officials of the KHADC’s enforcement wing and non-tribal street hawkers without paperwork were also directed to halt their business activity until they could produce these.
Speaking to reporters, Lakadong, who is also the EM in charge of Taxation, said that the council must check that businesses run by non-tribals are operating according to rules and procedures, are in possession of valid documents and licenses from the council and that they have to pay the professional taxes, etc.
He also informed that 80 per cent of the businesses run by non-tribals in the neighbourhood are following the rules but a large minority are not aware that they have to pay professional taxes.
