Shillong, Sep 24: In a sudden development, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Shemborlang Rynjah, tendered his resignation from the post today.
In the letter addressed to KHADC Chairman Strongpillar Kharjana, Rynjah cited health reasons for stepping down just under seven months after he was voted unopposed to the position.
“After careful consultation, I have come to the conclusion that due to my current health situation, it’s in the best interest for both my well being and the office that I decided to resign,” the resignation letter stated.
Meanwhile, Powell Sohkhlet MDC, spokesperson of the ruling Voice of the People Party (VPP), said that the party has accepted Rynjah’s decision and wishes him good health.
There should be no problem for the VPP in electing a new CEM as it holds an absolute majority in the KHADC, having won 17 out of 29 seats in the February 2025 election.
This was the first legislative victory for the VPP, which is a fairly new party in Meghalaya. It has had a fairly smooth ride in power so far, though there have been a few bumps, such as the ham-handed way it handled the issue of tollgates on national highways.
