The budget session of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will begin here tomorrow.
Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem will present the council’s budget for 2024-25.
The opposition UDP has prepared to raise a number of issues during the four-day session.
Interestingly, the budget session is being held for the KHADC term that was extended for six months.
The term of the present House had ended on March 5. However, the election of the new House could not be held as the State government has extended the term to another six months.
The extension of the term till August followed the proposal by KHADC for delimitation of its constituencies.
Although the delimitation committee headed by former KHADC judge Stralwell Kharsyiemlieh has completed its hearing process in all 29 constituencies, the final report is yet to be drafted by the committee due to delay by some deputy commissioners to send the electoral rolls of their districts.
Recently, Kharsyiemlieh had said that the committee needs to examine the electoral rolls in order to ascertain the number of voters in each constituency before making a final decision on reorganisation of constituencies for parity in the voters’ list.
In June 2023, the KHADC budget showed a deficit of Rs 55,080 for the year 2023-2024. The budget also projected expenditures of Rs 253,12,59,690 and estimated revenue mobilisation of Rs 253,12,04,610.
