The tug of war between the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Hima Sohra over the Majai issue has turned into a tit for tat battle.
After the executive dorbar of Hima Sohra gave a deadline till July 9 to the KHADC to cancel the notification granting the status of Raid to Majai village, the KHADC today gave a deadline till July 15 to the executive dorbar of Hima Sohra to return to the council all the original land documents issued to non-tribals in Majai.
The matter came up during the first day of the monsoon session of KHADC today.
Taking part in the zero hour notice moved by Jambor War in the House, KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that the council has discussed the issue related to Majai with the representatives of Hima Sohra and assured to come up with the best decision after the monsoon session and after consultation with Sohra MDC Titos Chyne.
Syiem however termed as an ugly turn the decision by the executive dorbar of Hima Sohra to issue an ultimatum to the KHADC on the matter.
“We have directed the executive dorbar of Hima Sohra to submit to us before July 15 all the original land documents issued by the Hima to non-tribals in Majai so that we will cancel such land documents,” Syiem said.
According to him, the issue of granting Raid status to Majai village has been done after looking at all aspects. He however, said the KHADC was ready to reexamine the matter and take the best decision.
Meanwhile, Syiem informed the House today that he was surprised with the allegations made by the HNLC against him on the issue of Majai.
He however asked the HNLC to find out the truth before making such allegations or accusing him of being a traitor.
“If there is truth in the allegations by the HNLC then I don’t mind being called a traitor but if they find out the good works that we are doing then the HNLC should question itself if it really loves the people more than us,” Syiem added.
