Shillong, Jul 30: The Central government appointed additional judge Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee of the Meghalaya High Court as a permanent judge.
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee, Additional Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, to be a Judge of that High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” a notification issued on July 29 reads.
The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath had recommended his name in its meeting held on July 1.
Justice Bhattacharjee was born in Shillong on March 26, 1968 and completed his LLB from North-Eastern Hill University. He was called to the Bar and began practising as an advocate in 1993.
He served as the Additional Advocate General of Meghalaya from September 2018 and, while serving in that role, was also designated as Senior Advocate in September 2021.
He was sworn in as an additional judge of the High Court of Meghalaya on August 1, 2023.
