Shillong, Apr 4: The Jaintia Students’ Union (Central Body) has sought urgent government intervention to protect indigenous tribal rights and ensure electoral integrity in Jaintia Hills.
In a memorandum, the union wants amendment to the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous District Council (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951, mandating Scheduled Tribe (ST) certification for JHADC election candidates and voters.
Other demands include restricting eligibility to indigenous tribal individuals, implementing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to ensure accurate electoral rolls, and addressing non-tribal influx concerns. The union cited West Bengal’s SIR initiative as a model, emphasizing transparency and fairness.
