The Divisional Soil & Water Conservation, Jowai Territorial Division has made its office plastic-free and has planted packing leaves (Phrynium Pubinerve) known locally as sla lamet.
This was informed by Soil and Water Conservation Officer, T. War to students who participated at the Rally cum awareness programme as part of Jal Shakti Abhiyan today in Jowai.
War said that the entire premise of the office is plastic-free and its garden planted with packing leaves for the last one year.
“We just need to make a commitment to ourselves that instead of buying packaging plastic bottles we need to carry along our own water bottle, to make a habit to use biodegradable leaf for food packing instead of foils and plastics and to carry grocery bags from home,” he underlined.
Urging students to contribute save and preserve water by doing their bit no matter how small it is he called on each one to make a commitment towards conservation of water.
The programme was organised by the office on the theme, “Catch the Rain, Where it Falls and When it Falls” which was participated by school students of Jowai.
West Jaiñtia Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner, PK Boro flagged off the rally from Daimasi playground, Ladthalaboh who emphasised on the need to understand the importance of protecting nature.
Soil & Water Conservation Officer, Jowai Plantation Division, L.Pohktai, officers, staff, teachers and students took part in the awareness rally.
An Essay Competition on the theme was also held.
