Shillong, Dec 6: The Jaiñtia National Council, Western Zone has demanded authorities to make public an inquiry into the unfortunate death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child at the Maternal and Child Hospital in Jowai.
Pynche Bareh (37), from Jalaphet in East Jaintia Hills, was referred to the Jowai hospital on June 3 from Sutnga Community Health Centre where she initially went for treatment for bleeding. However, she died at the hospital on June 5.
The incident had sparked outrage as the hospital was accused of negligence.
Zonal president Hamehi Bamon met the DMHO today to follow up on the case with a request to investigate into the “substandard services” of the hospital.
The JNC demanded severe punishment against the attending doctor and staff and called on the government to deliver justice and to take full responsibility for the children left behind.
According to the organisation, the DMHO informed that last month a request was made to the Director of Health Services that assistance reaches the family members of the deceased mother.
The organisation said the DMHO also assured that by December 15 the office would be able to engage with authorities to put forward the demands.
The JNC insisted that the findings of the inquiry conducted by the government over the past few months should be made public through the media.
It may be mentioned that an inquiry was constituted by the West Jaintia Hills district administration consisting of Additional Deputy Commissioner B Blah, the District Medical and Health Officer and a gynaecologist and paediatrician deputed by the EJH district administration. The committee has been asked to submit its report by June 9.
The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) had also taken suo moto cognizance of the incident and issued a notice to the government.
