The Jaintia National Council (JNC) today met with an official of the Powergrid in Khliehriat to make their opposition known regarding the planned removal of nine local Home Guards from the department who will be replaced by personnel from a “central government agency”.
In a release, the JNC said that these Home Guards have been working at the Powergrid for between 10 and 15 years and will now suddenly be replaced by outsiders. The JNC was told that the decision was taken based on a notification from the state government.
The pressure group criticised the state government for this and questioned the rationale behind hiring an external agency when local Home Guards have been trained and have gained experience over the years for the role. Terming the dismissal of the Home Guards as unjust, the JNC said it will engage with relevant ministers in the coming days. The Powergrid official they spoke to requested until May 5 to resolve the issue.
