Shillong, Dec 10: In response to the failure of the state government in paying the bills of contractors, especially of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and Water Resources Department projects, a joint action committee (JAC) was formed after a meeting held here today of various contractor associations.
After the meeting Welcome Langi, president of the All Jaiñtia Government Contractor and Supplier Association, was elected as the convener of the JAC and Plielad Tiewsoh as the secretary.
Speaking to the media, Tiewsoh, who is also president of Ri-Bhoi Government Contractors and Suppliers Association, said that the state government should clear the bills related to JJM, Water Resources and other departments.
He said that Christmas is just days away and while the Meghalaya government is ready to pay the advance salaries of employees, it is not releasing payments to contractors.
Tiewsoh also stated that the contractors have completed the projects at great cost to themselves and cannot move forward with other projects until their JJM bills are cleared.
Yesterday Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the central government has halted the transfer of funds for JJM projects around the country until an audit is carried out.
