Cabinet Minister and leader of the National People’s Party (NPP) James K. Sangma have begun campaigning for the Mawryngkneng Assembly bye-poll.
However, the Election Commission of India is yet to announce the date for the bye-poll.
Sangma, who holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, was speaking in a function during his visit to the site for the proposed Sohryngkham Public Health Centre (PHC) on September 24.
It may be mentioned that the Minister and NPP leader was accompanied by chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniaid Sing Syiem who is also from the same party.
Canvassing for Syiem, the NPP leader introduced the former as the party candidate for the bye-poll even as he urged those present to support him.
“We need whole hearted support from the voters of Mawryngkneng Constituency so that we can accomplish our endeavours to serve the citizens of the constituency as well as the State,” the m,nister said.
Sangma while praising the Sohryngkham MDC who is also the chairman of the KHADC, said that he would often come and discuss with the government the issue faced by the citizens of the State.
“We need such type of people to become leaders,” the Health and Family Welfare Minister said.
It may be mentioned that, Mawryngkneng MLA, Congress MLA David Nongrum passed away on February 2 this year after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Nongrum joined Congress party in 2018 and contested from Mawryngkngeng constituency.
Nongrum is a two-time MLA and also the son of former Speaker Charles Pyngrope.
