Forest and Environment Minister James K Sangma today promised that the state government will act against illegal coke factories operating in Meghalaya.
“Let me be very clear on this that the government will not tolerate any kind of illegal activity and if there are such kinds of coke plants which are functioning illegally, we will spare no efforts to close them down,” Sangma told the media.
He was reacting to the demand from several quarters for immediate shutting down of the illegal coke factories in West and East Jaintia Hills districts.
Earlier, cabinet minister AL Hek had written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to intervene in the alleged operation of over 30 coke factories in Jaintia Hills.
According to him, only five of 37 have obtained proper licences for operation while the rest are operating without valid licences.
