MLAs from Jaintia Hills have crossed party lines to strongly oppose the state government’s move to privatise or outsource parts or all of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), though they agreed to the government’s proposal to streamline the utility to make it more efficient.
The seven legislators comprised Lahkmen Rymbui, Coming One Ymbon, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Kyrmen Shylla, Wailadmiki Shylla, Nujorki Sungoh. They met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today.
Rymbui, a cabinet minister, said that the seven legislators of Jaintia Hills have unanimously decided to oppose the proposed privatization or handover of the distribution circles of Jaintia Hills to any public or private organisation from outside the state.
The legislators have also expressed their resentment against the proposed handover of maintenance and operation of the Myntdu Leshka Hydro Electric Project, which is located in Jaintia Hills.
Meanwhile, speaking to Highland Post, Comingone Ymbon said that the MLAs also demanded the state government to immediately set up an RT-PCR test centre in Jaintia Hills so that samples can be processed without having to be taken to Shillong first.
“The RT-PCR test centre in Jaintia Hills will help get the report promptly and it will also reduce the congestion and overcrowding in Shillong,” Ymbon said.
Informing that they have also apprised the CM of the immediate need to set up the corona hospital in Jowai and to increase the number of doctors, staff, and lab technicians in the health centres in Jaintia Hills.
The MLAs also demanded that more police outposts be set up in the region.
