The Jaiaw Pyllun Dorbar Shnong has pulled out of the government’s ‘peace committee’ set up to help restore tranquillity to Shillong after the violence over the weekend linked to the police’s killing of former militant Cherishterfield Thangkhiew.
In a letter to the committee and East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, the Dorbar said that it favours a “smaller and leaner” peace committee for Jaiaw and the Mawkhar and Lumdiengjri areas.
The Jaiaw Pyllun Dorbar Shnong comprises Jaiaw Laitdom, Jaiaw Langsning, Jaiaw Pdeng, Jaiaw Lansonalane and Jaiaw Shyiap Lumpyllon. The executive committee met today to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the state capital, especially in its own neighbourhood.
The Dorbar said that it is ready to work “hand in hand” with the district administration towards bringing peace back to Shillong but that responsibility for this ultimately rests with the state government.
It also requested the Meghalaya government to instruct the police not to enter any neighbourhood “without prior information/notice given to the Rangbah Shnong of the locality”, demanded that the police respect personal property and the refrain from assaulting innocents when they do enter a locality and relocate the Central Reserve Police Force camp located near the Mawlai bridge (which overlaps territory under the jurisdiction of Jaiaw Laitdom) as soon as possible.
