The Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun has asked the MeECL not to resort to power cut and to put a full stop to the smart meter project in the State.
A decision to put forth these demands was taken at an executive committee meeting held today which was attended by five dorbars.
The dorbars expressed concern over the likelihood of another load shedding after the NEEPCO has written to the North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre to snap electricity supply to Meghalaya for six months unless the State government clears the pending dues amounting to Rs 504.41 crore.
Chairman of the Dorbar, PD Nongrum said that load shedding affects students and their performances in different examinations and demanded that the government should immediately solve the crisis.
Nongrum said the meeting also suggested the MeECL to stop wasteful expenditure of bills collected from consumers.
He also said that the smart meter project could also be kept in abeyance until all outstanding power dues against purchase of power from various power stations are cleared.
Further, the Dorbar Shnong also urged the government to strictly implement central funds meant for clearing power dues.
