The International Day of Disabled Persons was observed here with a health camp tailored for individuals with disabilities.
The festivities took place at Sajer Community Hall with local MLA Mayralborn Syiem present.
In addition to offering free medical checkups for the disabled, the programme featured a range of events designed to commemorate this special day for persons with disabilities, all orchestrated by the HANS Foundation.
Addressing the gathering, Syiem paid homage to the sacrifices of Mother Teresa, acknowledging her unforgettable service to the poor and needy. He commended the Block Mission Coordinator’s office of Umling block for organising such a celebration, emphasising the importance of recognising persons with disabilities.
In South West Khasi Hills the day was observed at the Maharam Higher Secondary School in Mawkyrwat.
The programme was organised by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer in collaboration with the office of the District Legal Services Authority on the theme “United in actions to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities”.
Block Development Officer, I. Lawrynniang who attended the programme as the chief guest spoke on the objectives of observing the day and stressed on the importance of promoting an understanding disability issues and to mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
He also encouraged people with disabilities to shed negative thoughts but to strive forward towards a bright future by reminding them of prominent personalities who in spite of the challenges and disabilities rose to power and great heights.
He also urged them to avail all government schemes and benefits for their welfare.
Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel Nosmi Hashah dwelt at length on the Rights of People with Disabilities Act 2016 and R.J Wahlang In charge UDID, said that through the Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card PwDs can avail benefits offered by the government through different schemes such as vocational training, meritorious scholarship, special employment exchange, job reservation financial assistance and others.
District Social Welfare Officer E Tariang and officials of the department were present on the occasion.
