Shillong, Aug 2: The 5th Men’s and 3rd Women’s Inter Mahari Football Tournament, 2025 commenced at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School field in Chandmari, Tura on Saturday.
The tournament, organised by the District Sports Office, features 37 men’s teams and 20 women’s teams.
PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak and Chockpot MLA Sengchim N. Sangma declared the tournament open.
Marak emphasised the importance of utilising sports infrastructure and encouraged youth to make the most of these opportunities.
The inaugural match between Rongmitu Mahari and Dawa Mahari saw Rongmitu Mahari emerge victorious with a score of 5-1.
The final matches are scheduled for September 20, with a potential special appearance by Bollywood actor John Abraham.
The tournament aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among the different “Maharis” (clans) in the Garo Hills region. With a focus on youth development and community engagement, the Inter tournament is set to be an exciting event.
