The West Garo Hills district administration has ordered a police inquiry after allegations of a massive gathering that took place in the house of a VEC president near Phulbari in the district.
The video of the meeting that was later provided to the DC, SP and the SDO – Civil of Dadenggre showed at least 500 people, huddled together, allegedly in the house of one the VEC presidents under Demdema C&RD Block (name withheld). The crowd can be seen violating all protocols in place due to COVID with none of the attendees in the meeting wearing masks or maintaining social distance.
What is even more interesting in the entire meeting is the fact that the meeting took place to campaign for a MLA candidate for the upcoming by-elections, though the date for the by-election to Rajabala is yet to be announced.
A local resident, on the condition of anonymity, claimed that the meetings were being held on a nightly basis despite the curfew that has been imposed in the district owing to COVID.
What is even more interesting is the fact that in the meeting held yesterday, two former MDCs of the GHADC, who are apparently in support of the candidate for whom the meeting was held, were also present. Both the MDCs also can be seen without any masks on or maintaining distance between themselves and the gathering.
Videos of the meeting have apparently been sent to various administrators, including the police and an investigation into the matter is currently on.
Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh said that the matter had been informed to them and the superintendent of police has been asked to inquire and submit a report.
Further SP, Vivekanand Singh informed that the incident was being probed and action would be taken after details are verified.
