Editor,
Amidst claims and counter claims by few political parties like the BJP, UDP and NPP of obtaining single majority in the ensuing General Elections to the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to be held on February 27, yet after proper checking of the political ground realities in all sectors of Jaintia Hills, Khasi Hills and Garo Hills none of them seem to reach near the target, not even the NPP, which have witnessed mass joining of political bigwigs into its fold.
Now let us turn to the West Khasi Hills sector beginning from 30 Mairang AC. Here the closest tussle here is amongst Metbah Lyngdoh of UDP, Batskhem Ryntathiang of INC and Shanlang Warjri of VPP. But it will be mainly the first two. In 31 Mawthadraishan AC the most keenly contested candidates are between Brolding Nongsiej of UDP and Shakliar Warjri of HSPDP. In 32 Nongstoin AC the political situation is very hazy. The major share of the 44,000 odd votes will be shared mainly by Gabriel Wahlang of the INC, Macmillan Byrsat of NPP, Sanjied Kynsai Shangrit of HSPDP, Macmillan Kharbani of TMC and Polestar Nongsiej of UDP. While the rest of the votes will be scrambled by Diostarness Jyndiang of BJP and Bobby Kharshandy of VPP, it is expected that the victory may go to any of the first two or three.
In 33 Rambrai-Jyrngam AC the fortune will smile on any amongst K.P Pangniang of HSPDP, Kimfa Sidney Marbaniang of NPP, Fernandez S. Dkhar of TMC and Golden star Nonglong of INC. In 34 Mawshynrut AC the fiercest struggle was amongst Methodical Dkhar of HSPDP, Gigur Myrthong of NPP and Justine G Momin of TMC. However, Andrew Charles Gare of the INC may surprise many as a dark horse. In 35 Ranikor AC there are many candidates of whom there are four IND. In some contests IND may come out victorious but this is ruled out in this constituency. However, the stiff contest will be between Pius Marwein of UDP, Martin M. Danggo of BJP and Tengsim G. Momin of TMC. However, the lone lady Victorealness Syiemlieh of the INC may come out as a surprise to many even if she may not make it.
In the lucky number 36 Mawkyrwat AC of the Khasi-Jaintia sector of Meghalaya which constitute the majority of the 60 Assembly member House, the stiffest contest is expected to be amongst Renikton L. Tongkhar of UDP, Carnes Sohshang of INC, Sounder Strong Cajee of TMC and Medalsing Lyngdoh of HSPDP. However, according to political pundits, the winner will emerge from any of the first two of this lucky number constituency.
