The Congress has demanded for an independent inquiry into the controversial killing of ex-HNLC general secretary, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Saturday said an independent inquiry is the only way to restore faith in justice system.
Congress working president James S Lyngdoh in a statement said shooting of an unarmed person in the wee hours conveys a message of betrayal, injustice and abject failure of the State government.
“I cannot comprehend how the huge force that entered Thangkhiew’s house cannot overpower one man and need to shoot him dead,” Congress MLA Himalaya Shangpliang questioned even as he said a judicial inquiry is the only way so that everybody knows what happed that tragic night.
Meanwhile, the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynñiewtrep (SNSBH) too has demanded for an independent judicial inquiry into the incident.
Stating that the government has always sought the dorbar shnong’s assistance in various works, leader of the synjuk, RL Blah said that the government should have first communicated with the headman of the locality when they came to the locality and such incident could have been prevented.
He said that such incidents have only created unrest and insecurity among the public and lose their confidence in the police department.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said that the party will discuss the issue tomorrow.
“Personally, I strongly condemn the incident and I feel an inquiry must be instituted on the incident. In fact the home department has to shoulder the responsibility for the incident,” Mawthoh said.
He said that when Thangkhiew came over ground and was felicitated by the government, there was positivity that a convenient atmosphere is what we expected. But what happened on August 13 was unfortunate.
