Shillong, Jan 19: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday met the Chairman of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC), D Langstang, urging him to implement the recommendations made by the MPSC reforms committee 2025.
The union expressed its discontent and disappointment against the MPSC for failing to bring about transparency and accountability in the working of the Commission, which it claimed is plagued with nepotism and corruption.
According to the pressure group, the Commission has time and again failed to bring about a positive reform in the system.
The KSU has led several agitations and protests against the Commission, including submitting a 20-point charter to revamp the MPSC to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on August 21, 2024.
The MPSC reforms committee 2025, headed by Principal Secretary Frederick R Kharkongor, had submitted its report and the Chief Minister had announced the reforms on August 26, 2025. However, the Commission has not implemented any of the reforms, prompting the KSU to demand immediate action.
Specifically, it wants the implementation of key recommendations, including publication of marks, carbon copy of OMR sheets, annual declaration of assets and liabilities, and notification of marks for personal interview. The union also objected to the Commission’s advertisement calling for applications from “genuine residents of India”, stating that state government jobs are meant only for genuine residents of the state.
Furthermore, the KSU questioned the Commission’s decision to conduct descriptive examinations instead of objective (MCQ) examinations, citing manipulation of marks and lack of transparency. The KSU also raised concerns about unfair practices in examination centres, including cheating and mobile phone usage and suggested hiring an agency to conduct examinations.
