Nongpoh, Jun 30: The Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner has prohibited illegal mining for extraction of sand, gravel and boulder in the entire stretches of Umiam River.
In an order issued today, Deputy Commissioner Rossete M. Kurbah said Section 144CrPC has been imposed to stop illegal mining of sand, gravel and boulder during the monsoon season at Umiam River.
According to the order, the prohibition was issued after information received regarding illegal mining of sand, gravel and boulder at Umiam River especially at Mawrathud and Bersiej village under Mawhati Constituency.
The order had also prohibited the removal of sand, gravel and boulders from all streams or rivers as it might lead to hazardous impact on ecological equilibrium and changes in channel configuration and flow-paths.
