Shillong, Feb 7: The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has accused the State government of allowing illegal coal mining to flourish under its supervision.
KHNAM Working President Thomas Passah said that the recent coal mine tragedy that claimed 25 lives is proof that illegal coal mining persists and that the government should admit and take moral responsibility for the explosion.
“No matter how much the state Government tries to justify it is clear that every coal mining activity is done with the permission of the government itself,” Passah said.
The government may put out a statement and order an inquiry just to try to prove otherwise and try to fool the people of the State, KHNAM said.
“Coal mining cannot be carried out secretly. Coal is not being transported in a match box and hidden in a pocket. How can the Government not find out such illegal mining in a large and open area, moreover trucks that transport these illegal coal travel openly via state road and national highway via police station, police outpost and police check gates, who can the police fail to see that?” Passah questioned.
