Khliehriat, Mar 25: East Jaintia Hills police have arrested 34 individuals suspected of involvement in illegal coal mining and transportation in the ongoing enforcement drive against unlawful mining and transport activities since February.
The district has been at the centre of significant controversy due to illegal coal mining activities and especially after the Thangsko mine explosion that claimed at least 33 lives.
Superintendent of Police Pankaj Rasgania today said over the course of this operation, which began from February 5, 107 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered.
Additionally, on March 23 and 25 police seized two trucks and an Alto in Nongrim Hills and Damcherra, Kuliang loaded with illegal coal, the SP said.
He said the alto car was loaded with nine gunny bags of illegal coal.
