Responding to the promise by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma this week that Mairang civil sub-division will be upgraded to district status, Sohra MDC Titosstarwell Chyne has asked the same to be done for Sohra.
Chyne, who is also the Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), said he will meet the CM soon to apprise him of the demand of Sohra’s citizens.
It was only in November that Chyne and Shella MLA Balajied Synrem, along with traditional heads, met Sangma on this demand. The delegation had reminded the CM that a district for Sohra, which was made a civil sub-division of East Khasi Hills in 1982, was a deeply held desire of the late United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Donkupar Roy.
Chyne is also a member of the UDP and so is the MLA for Mairang, Metbah Lyngdoh, who is also Speaker of the Assembly. The UDP is a member of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government but has recently ruffled feathers within the alliance by calling for the resignation of Power Minister James Sangma, the brother of the CM.
