Mylliem MDC, Ronnie V Lyngdoh has said that it is high time that CCTV cameras are installed at Ïewduh, the biggest traditional market place in the city, to prevent illicit activities like pick-pocketing and theft.
“I think the Hima Mylliem has their resources and installing CCTVs for the benefit of the people and their safety won’t cost them their fortune,” he told HP.
He said that CCTVs cameras can be installed at the vantage points of the market to monitor and curb illegal activities.
“It is high time that our traditional institutions adapt with the changing times and have conditions that will benefit the people at large. Some of the myntris are old that they are not allowed by their family members to even go out of their houses so how will they perform their role?” he asked.
He said that he had advised clans to write to the district council to bring some modification in the appointment and succession so that the people have more responsibilities and perform roles to the expectation, etc. “If your leadership does not benefit anyone then who are you leading and who does it benefit?,” he questioned.
He lamented that the problem also lies with the system where someone is elected for life. “There is someone bedridden and too old to take up responsibilities but since they are elected for life this becomes a problem for the smooth functioning of an institution and to keep up with the times.”
It may be mentioned that the Hima Mylliem had recently installed a public address system in Ïewduh last month after various incidences of pick-pocketing and theft were reported in the market.
