The ICAR-KVK in West Garo distributed around 3,000 orange tree saplings on Friday to 90 farmers across five villages of the district.
The saplings were received from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. The distribution was carried out in the presence of ICAR-KVK WGH Head Monica Suresh Singh and KVK scientists Joyoshree Mahanta and Tarun Das.
This initiative, it is hoped, will help farmers of the district in boosting the production of quality oranges besides enhancing their incomes.
Two varieties – Citrus indica and Citrus reticulata – were distributed to the farmers. C. indica, also known as Memang Narang, is a wild, endangered citrus species while Khasi Mandarin (C reticulata), is considered unique for its taste and high sugar content and therefore well suited to the region, a press release stated.
