The Meghalaya High Court has directed the State government to ensure that all meat sellers in the State follow proper hygienic conditions.
The court also said that roadside selling of meat products without the meat kept in any enclosure is not ideal or advisable.
The order was issued by the division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh on a public interest litigation filed by Gau Gyan Foundation, an organisation involved with cow protection in India.
“The State must also ensure that more hygienic conditions are followed by meat-sellers, whatever kind of meat they may be selling. Apart from meat shops openly displaying torn parts of animals, which are often hideous to look at, roadside selling of meat products without the meat kept in any enclosure may not be ideal or advisable notwithstanding the cooler temperature enjoyed in most parts of the State. Such an aspect of the matter also requires the attention of the administration,” the High Court said.
The High Court has fixed June 14 for hearing of the matter.
