The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has sought clarification from the Education Department regarding the government’s intention to take over SSA schools.
Enlang Sawian, HYC education secretary, said today that the pressure group’s attention was drawn to a recent departmental notification concerning the government’s plan to assume control of SSA schools that are currently managed by their own local managing committees.
“We appreciate the efforts of the Department of Education in striving to enhance the quality of education in our state, particularly through the management of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools,” Sawian said. “However, the recent notifications have raised several concerns among stakeholders, including parents, teachers and community members regarding the potential changes in governance and operational structures of these SSA schools managed by the managing Committees.”
The HYC wants to know whether all school managing committees overseeing SSA schools will be discontinued and disbanded if and when the state assumes control. The group also wants clarity as to whether any SSA schools, such as those with very low student enrollment, will be closed by the government. Sawian was particularly concerned over the fate of SSA school teachers if and when the government takes charge.
