The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) today said that the State government should hand over the inquiry report into the killing of former militant Cheristerfield Thangkhiew to his family members and make it public.
On May 20, retired Chief Justice T Vaiphei, who led the inquiry, had submitted his findings and recommendations into the police encounter-turned-killing of the ex-Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militant, which led to days of unrest in Shillong.
The HYC in a letter to Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma today said that since the inquiry report has been submitted the matter should not be delayed as “justice delayed is justice denied.”
“We believe that the enquiry commission has named the culprit(s) involved in the murder of the deceased person and has also fix responsibility on all the persons involved in the commission of the crime and as such they should immediately be arrested and/or prosecute under the relevant provisions of the law of the land and in case they are public servants (Police personnel) they should immediately be suspended,” HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said.
“Failure to act on our legitimate demand, we will have but no option than to resort to protest against the government,” he added.
