The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) moved the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner today against alleged encroachment of land by the military near Anjalee Petrol Pump here.
The pressure group accused the army of pushing its fence right up to the public road.
HYC Shillong president John Lyngdoh said that the military is trying to take advantage of the lockdown imposed on the district, thinking that no one will notice the seizure of land.
“We demand the district administration intervene and immediately give direction to halt the illegal encroachment by the military or we will remove the fences ourselves,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the youth wing of the Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) said that the matter should be raised with the Ministry of Defence.
“This is not the first time and not the first place and such attempts are a slap in the face of the state government,” KHNAM youth president Thomas Passah said. “How were these fences erected during the lockdown period and how is it possible that no government officials or police saw this?”
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo has noted the complaint and halted the ongoing fencing work.
