Shillong, Apr 1: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) Education Cell has voiced strong opposition against the recent decision by authorities to discontinue the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) bus service intended for school students.
According to the HYC education cell, this abrupt decision has led to significant difficulties for families in Shillong and nearby areas, leaving many students without reliable transportation to their educational institutions.
The MTC bus service has long been a vital resource for numerous school-going children, particularly those hailing from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The cessation of this crucial service places an undue financial strain on parents who are already grappling with the rising costs of living and education, it said.
The HYC while extending its support to parents and guardians, who have rallied against the halting of the MTC bus service, said their concerns are not only justified but highlight the dire needs of families relying on this form of transport.
It said that education is a fundamental right, and it is imperative for the government to establish conditions that facilitate easy access to education, especially for those facing economic hardships. “Any policy or administrative decision that obstructs students’ ability to attend school regularly must be reconsidered immediately,” the HYC added.
The HYC urged the state government to promptly restore the MTC bus service for school students, prioritize the educational opportunities of children and respond to the urgent needs expressed by concerned parents and students alike.
