The Deputy Commissioner (Supply) of West Garo Hills has directed the concerned authorities to identify government servants who still possess ration cards under the National Food Security Act 2013 despite not being allowed to avail of the benefits meant for economically weaker sections of society.
The Deputy Commissioner informed that there are less fortunate households under Tura Municipal area that have been inadvertently left out from Socio Economic Caste Census of 2011 and, through that, they have been excluded from the NFSA 2013.
Therefore, in order to mitigate the problems of poor and needy households during Covid-19 pandemic, all the development committees of the Tura Municipal area have been directed to identify households and report those who possess NFSA cards despite having one of their family members as government servants.
The DC (Supply) in 2016 and 2018 had circulated press releases directing all government servants to surrender their ration cards so that poor and needy households can be accommodated in their place.
Furthermore, all Sub-Inspectors of Supply under Tura Sadar Division are directed to conduct a special drive for inclusion of vulnerable sections of society under NFSA 2013 and also to identify street dwellers, rag pickers, hawkers, migrant labourers, homeless destitute and commercial sex workers in the district.
