West Garo Hills police arrested one Assam resident, Jamal Sheikh, yesterday after he was caught with 19 mobile phones, accessories and cash that he had stolen from a shop in Hallidayganj.
Sheikh, who is a resident of Mandarpara-Sukhchar in South Salmara district, had broken the lock of the shop before making away with the loot and cash. He was part of a gang of miscreants that had been involved in the burglary.
Police began investigation into the case after the owner of the shop filed a police complaint on the burglary.
“Through sustained investigation, we arrested one of the accused (Sheikh) and recovered 19 mobile phones from his possession. We are on the lookout for the other members of the same gang or burglars,” said Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh.
A police case has been filed at the Hallidayganj Police Station. The town shares a border with Assam.
Meanwhile the SP, warned against buying phones from people without genuine receipts being provided by them, reminding them that this is a criminal offence.
