The National People’s Party (NPP) witnessed a surge of support in Ri-Bhoi today, with hundreds of former members of the Congress, United Democratic Party and Bharatiya Janata Party joining the fold.
NPP vice-president and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong was present to warmly welcome the new members at a function in which Macdalyne Sawkmie Mawlong, the MDC and NPP candidate for the 2023 state elections. Also at the gathering was her brother, Umsning MLA Jason Sawkmie Mawlong, who, it is rumoured, will quit the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) before the next elections.
Former top UDP members who joined the NPP were led by Lawrence Nongrum and Rayonald Kharkamni and other party workers while the ex-Congress members were led by the former president of Nongpoh Block Congress Committee, Plielad Tiewsoh.
NPP supporters from Nongpoh constituency pledged their support at the gathering to the candidature of Mawlong from the seat next year.
Tynsong said that the NPP has done tremendous work for Meghalaya and will win the election handsomely. Some of the good works, according to him, are the boundary dispute agreement with Assam and the launch of numerous road building projects.
