Shillong, Dec 17: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) Youth Wing, West Khasi Hills District, has urged the government to upgrade the District Library into a District Multi-Convention Centre.
In a memorandum to Minister of Arts and Culture Sanbor Shullai, the youth wing stated that upgradation of the library in Nongstoiñ would cater to the diverse needs of the people of the district.
HSPDP Youth Wing District President Wellessly Lyngkhoi said the District Library building, though established with noble intent, has seen minimal utilisation due to limited facilities and infrastructural constraints.
Lyngkhoi said that the growing population and increasing demand for a common venue to host youth training programs, cultural functions, seminars, and other events necessitate transforming the existing infrastructure into a modern multipurpose convention and community centre.
This initiative would revitalise the library premises, serving as a hub for promoting arts, culture, youth engagement, education, and social development, he added.
The proposed centre would greatly benefit students, artists, youth organisations, and the general public, providing a study room for unemployed youth preparing for exams.
The HSPDP Youth Wing has urged the government to allocate necessary funds, and include the project in the state’s upcoming cultural and infrastructure development plan for 2025-26.
