The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has requested that a border outpost (BOP) be set up in Kyrshai village, the main entry point in West Khasi Hills between Assam and Meghalaya.
Located in Rambrai Syiemship, the village is also a hotspot among the disputed areas between the two states. It currently has a seven-man border wing but this is only a “skeleton staff” and not sufficient, the regional party said.
A delegation led by HSPDP president, KP Pangniang, submitted a memorandum in this regard to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today.
According to the party, which is a member of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, Kyrshai is frequently tense because of the fissures that develop with Assam. Assam has already set up a permanent BOP at Ukiam, which is located across the Kyrshai River.
“It is the need of the hour for Meghalaya to immediately regularise the border wing or to set up a new full-fledged BOP at Kyrshai in order to maintain the peace and security of the people of the area and to keep vigil on the law and order situation arising every now and then,” the HSPDP said, adding that there is no cause for delay, as the Kyrshai Dorbar Shnong has already handed over a plot of land for the BOP to the West Khasi Hills police.
The memo also suggested that some personnel from SF-10, which is to be downsized, could be stationed in Kyrshai.
