The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) is still undecided on whether to form pre-poll alliances ahead of the 2023 state elections.
The junior partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government today held its state executive committee meeting and decided to constitute an election committee to plan out strategies for next year’s polls.
Speaking with mediapersons, HSPDP president KP Pangniang said that the party discussed its preparedness, the road ahead to strengthen the HSPDP base and secure more seats. The party currently has two members in the 60-member Assembly.
The HSPDP is in an alliance within the MDA with the United Democratic Party. Seat sharing possibilities and other matters will be discussed when the two sides meet.
When asked whether the HSPDP will face a backlash from the public over failure of the government to tackle illegal coal mining and other issues, Pangniang said that the party has always taken a strong line against such matters.
There is also growing unrest in many border areas where residents fear that their land will go to Assam when the bilateral border deal goes through. However, the HSPDP leader said that the regional committees appointed by the state government had done their homework and had taken all stakeholders on board before the agreement was struck.
