The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) is confident that it will be able to hold the Mawkyrwat seat at the next state elections, replacing one Lyngdoh Tongkhar for another.
The sitting Mawkyrwat MLA, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, is expected to quit the party in favour of the United Democratic Party (UDP) before the polls, which have to be held by March next year.
The HSPDP has already fixed on Medalsing Lyngdoh Tongkhar as Renikton’s replacement.
Speaking to Highland Post recently, HSPDP youth wing president Sandondor Ryntathiang said the party is certain to retain the Mawkyrwat seat with Medalsing.
“We guarantee that Medalsing Lyngdoh Tongkhar will win the Mawkyrwat seat because the HSPDP’s votes of almost 5,000 remain undivided except for Renikton and a few of his followers,” Ryntathiang said.
Stating that many of the HSPDP leaders who left to support the UDP have also returned to the HSPDP fold, including the ex-MDC Hadrain Lyngdoh, he said, “We guarantee that our candidate will emerge as the winner in 2023 and the party seat will be retained.”
Meanwhile, as to the Sohiong seat, Ryntathiang said that, to date, legislator Samlin Malngiang has not made himself clear on whether he will quit the HSPDP or not.
“Malngiang is still with the HSPDP and the speculation that he will join the NPP still remains speculation,” the youth leader added.
