The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has unanimously resolved to be a permanent member of the National Federation of New States (NFNS).
The NFNS is a federation of groups demanding new states to be carved out of existing ones, such as for a tribal state in Tripura, Gorkhaland, Karbi Anglong, etc.
The decision was taken at the HSPDP central executive committee meeting held today.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, HSPDP president KP Pangiang said that they have resolved to push forward the demand to bifurcate Meghalaya into separate Khasi-Jaintia and Garo states while also pressing for the resolution of the interstate boundary dispute, amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and Eighth Schedule language recognition.
Members of the NFNS will meet on November 30 in West Khasi Hills to restrengthen their positions and support each other in raising the voice for separate states during the winter session of Parliament.
