At least two houses as well as a shop were destroyed after a herd of elephants passed through the village of Baksalpara under Kharkutta in North Garo Hills last night.
The incident occurred at about 11:30 pm when the herd, which had been on the move the past few days, passed through the village and trampled the houses that came in its path. Local sources pointed to at least 30 elephants being a part of the herd.
Forest officials stated that the herd has currently moved out of the village and had destroyed the houses as well as nearby plantations. However no injuries were reported from the local population.
“We have assessed the damage and taken details of the people who have been affected. The elephants have moved out of the area and gone to the nearby village. We are currently monitoring the situation,” said the wildlife ranger of the area, Annie Marak.
The alert villagers had moved out of the way of danger after being alerted of the pachyderm’s presence, though their fields came under attack from the elephants.
The elephants had earlier been seen near the Dudhnoi area under Goalpara district before they moved towards Kharkutta.
