The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly today condoled the sudden demise of Mawphlang MLA Syntar Klas Sunn during an obituary reference taken up during the second day of the autumn session.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma rue that this was the first time that a member pass away when the house is in session. He recalled the contributions made by Sunn and said, “When it came to question, resolution or any kind of debate, I don’t think there were many like him who used to do homework in detail…He already had the answer to the question he was asking…,” he said.
Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma said that for a member to suddenly pass away during the time of session is unprecedented. He recalled Sunn when he was the chief engineer of the Public Health Engineering and said that the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme is one of the government assets, which is maintained appropriately.
“It has also been a privilege to have him as an MLA with wealth of experience in administration in a very crucial department. He might be a different politician, as many officers have joined politics and had disastrous career, but with late Sunn we already knew that he was going to be in public service for a very long time. But the irony is that life has been cut short,” he lamented.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the August House is unfortunate. “We have lost five members within a span of three and a half years…this is the first time it had ever happened,” he said, adding, “I am sure that the Almighty will be with all the members of this august house till the end of this term”.
Tynsong said Sunn had contributed immensely to sports and promoted talents.
Former Assembly Speaker and senior Congress leader Charles Pynrope said, “We definitely missed him as an officer and politician. As MLA, with so much of rich experience we all benefitted,” he said.
Pyngrope also informed that the former MLA was a football lover and had kept a scheme amounting to Rs 2 crore to renovate the stadium and field at Polo ground.
Other members also paid rich tribute to the departed legislator.
