The NGO Green Tech Foundation has received complaints, it said today in a press release, of hospitals discharging contaminated waste water containing blood, chemicals and radioactive waste straight into the state’s drains which then ultimately flows into rivers, lakes and down to the sea.
Drains in Meghalaya are not linked to a sewer system that treats the waste before it is released into the environment.
Green Tech claimed that improper release of hospital waste could lead to “unhealthy, detrimental effects” on human beings, flora and fauna.
No evidence was presented by Green Tech nor were names of hospital establishments guilty of such discharge were named.
Healthcare facilities with a certain number of beds had to install contaminated wastewater treatment tanks by December 31, 2019. Non-bed institutions can only release their waste only after proper treatment.
