The Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) today marched in protest against rising unemployment in the state.
The group has set a timeframe of 45 days for the government to take a policy decision on the issue, which according to them is one of the causes of substance abuse amongst youth.
The members marched from Shillong Civil Hospital Point towards Main Secretariat, Additional Secretariat and back shouting slogans against the government.
HNYM president, Louis Dohtdong said that they had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conard K Sangma in July demanding 80 per cent reservation in the private firms/companies and to create a policy for employment creation in the private sector.
He said they had expected the issue would be debated in the recently concluded Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Assembly but it did not happen. “This shows that the government does not think about the future of the youths,” Dohtdong said.
“If we want to root out evil from the government should provide employment opportunities,” he added.
