Shillong, Mar 18: The Hmar Inpui, Meghalaya Region (HI-MR) has welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) between the HPC-D, Assam region, and the Government of Assam on March 15.
The HI-MR said the historic agreement marks a significant milestone in their collective journey towards recognition and dignity, as well as establishing peace and sustainable development for the Hmar people.
HI-MR President B. K. Buongpui in a statement said the establishment of the Hmar Welfare and Development Council (HWDC) in Assam is a meaningful achievement. It serves as a vital framework for safeguarding and strengthening our Hmar identity, while also contributing to the broader Hmar-Mizo identity.
“This memorandum stands as a testament to our enduring aspirations and the recognition of the Hmar people as true sons of the soil of Assam,” he added.
Congratulating the Kuki on their similar MoS with the Government of Assam for the establishment of the Kuki Welfare and Development Council (KWDC), the organisation said this milestone reflects a commitment to dialogue and cooperation that honours the identities and dignity of all communities.
The HI-MR has urged all stakeholders—community leaders, civil society, and youth—to actively support the effective implementation of this agreement.
“Strengthening our identity while fostering harmony and development must remain central as we embark on this new chapter,” it said.
The organisation praised the centre and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and said the agreement serves as a model for future dialogues and peace initiatives.
