Shillong, Mar 23: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has raised concerns regarding air pollution emitted by Riangdo Veneer industry at Umiam.
HITO said it observed a significant discharge of thick black smoke from the industry’s chimney on March 18, prompting them to file a formal complaint with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB).
“As an organization dedicated to environmental stewardship and sustainability, we believe it is imperative to report this alarming occurrence to your esteemed board.” HITO president Donbok Dkhar said in the complaint.
He highlighted that visible emissions constitute a serious violation of established air quality standards, directly impacting the health of local residents.
In the complaint, Dkhar insisted that the industry should take immediate actions to mitigate their emissions. He urged the company to activate effective pollution control devices (PCDs) during operational processes, especially when incinerating waste materials.
“We request that they switch on the PCDs as soon as the boilers commence operation to ensure emissions are adequately managed,” he asserted.
Furthermore, HITO urged the MSPCB to conduct a thorough inspection of the facility to verify compliance with environmental regulations and take necessary actions against any violations.
