The Ri-Bhoi unit of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has officially lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner demanding legal measures be taken against those it alleges are extorting money from vehicles bringing chickens into Meghalaya.
The pressure group said that it had received troubling reports about demands for money made against chicken suppliers operating in Byrnihat.
One vehicle was reportedly charged Rs 30,000 and the extortion has a knock-on effect on the price of poultry in the local market, HITO said.
