Shillong, Aug 6: The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday stated that it was pleased to note from a report filed by the government that substantial action has been taken by the latter in relation to stray dogs.
A division bench of the High Court consisting of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the issue of stray dogs and their effects on the state’s human population filed by advocate Kaustav Paul.
“The committees under rule 4 of the said rules have been constituted for the said two districts namely, South Garo Hills district and West Jaintia Hills district,” the division bench of the High Court stated.
The court also stated that furthermore, it appears from the report and from the submissions of Additional Advocate General, T Yangi B, that awareness camps have been set up by the government.
“…drives to vaccinate stray dogs against rabies, to sterilise and castrate them and keep them in shelters as far as practicable so as to segregate them from the people have been undertaken. Registration of pet dogs is also being carried out,” the High Court observed.
The High Court stated that on the prayer of the petitioner, Paul, appearing in person, it directed that it would be open for him to file an affidavit dealing with this report.
“Such affidavit may be filed by August 25, 2025. Thereupon, we shall be in a position to hear out the PIL and dispose of the same,” the High Court stated. The PIL has been listed for hearing next on August 28.
