A drug trafficker was nabbed on Saturday in an operation by West Garo Hills police and heroin worth Rs 2 crore was seized from his possession.
On social media, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma wrote, “The @MeghalayaPolice thwarted another attempt by the drug mafia to ruin our youth! In a swift operation, @wghpolice nabbed one inter-state trafficker and seized heroin worth Rs 2 crore.”
Combatting the trade in drugs has been a big focus for the Meghalaya police in the last one year or so, with numerous arrests and seizures being made. Meghalaya is often used as a transit route to smuggle drugs from other states in the North East or from Myanmar to the rest of India but it is also becoming a market for drug dealers as well, something that the police and state government want to curb.
The successful apprehension of the interstate trafficker and seizure of a significant amount of heroin demonstrates the police’s fight against drug traffickers.
